Samsung’s ATIV S: Windows Phone 8 device

Samsung this morning unveiled a new line of devices under the name ATIV — a collection of tablets, convertible notebooks and phones based on Microsoft’s upcoming Windows 8 and Windows Phone 8 operating systems.

The ATIV S phone is particularly interesting as the first Windows Phone 8 device to be publicly announced.

The device will come with 1.5 GHz dual-core processor and run on HSPA+ (no LTE, which suggests it’s destined for T-Mobile in the U.S., according to CNET.). It has a 4.8-inch HD Super AMOLED display but is super-thin, at 8.7 millimeters. Features include NFC support. No word yet on pricing or specific date of availability.

Ben Rudolph on Microsoft’s official Windows Phone Blog has more details, noting that the home button is a raised physical button, not a capacitive button.

In case you were wondering, ATIV is backwards for “VITA,” the Latin word for “life” … of course.
